Excel Tutorial - Creating Zoom Chart


Step 1: Create data

In a new workbook, create a worksheet and name it as "Zoom". Enter the following data to the worksheet in cell A1:B13.


Step 2: Define 2 names


Go to Formulas Tab->Name Manager->Define and add the following 2 names






Step 3: Show Developer Tab


Excel 2007 

Click the Microsoft Office Button  , and then click Excel Options.

Click Popular, and then select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box. 


In Excel 2010, Click the File tab> Options > Customize Ribbon. Under Customize the Ribbon and under Main Tabs, select the Developer check box.




Step 4: Create a Scroll Bar


Go to Developer Tab->Insert->Form Controls->Scroll Bar (Form Control)



Click on D2 and drag to I2, to create a scroll bar that cover cell D2 to I2


Right Click on the scroll bar, and select Format Control.




In the dialog box, click on the Control tab

Set the Min Value and Max Value and the cell link



Step 5: Plot the chart


Select any empty cell, i.e cell D4


Go to Insert Tab->Charts->Column

-       an empty chart is created


Go to ChartTools-> Design-> Select Data



In the Select Data Source dialog box, Click on the add button:



In the Edit Series dialog box, create a series with the info as follows



Click OK

When you are back to the Select Data Source dialog box, Under Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels, click on Edit:




In the Axis Labels dialog box, create an Axis label range with the info as follows



Click OK



Step 6: Try it out!


Click on the scroll button on the scroll bar and see how the chart zooms in and out!
